NEW Good Artists: Portraiture (All Levels)

Portrait Painting and Drawing

For all the classes, a model is provided, sometimes for just one or two sessions and  three sessions when painting.

For beginners and students with limited experience, the course is structured starting with how to construct a sense of the three-dimensional using black and white drawing first before attempting colour using chalk pastel. Finally you will be encouraged to try painting. This can be either oil, acrylic or watercolour painting. Drawing can be the main focus, if you prefer

Experienced students are encouraged to structure their own learning.

What The Course is About:

Through demonstration, knowledge is passed on about the expressions and techniques of great portrait artists of both the past and present.

This includes knowledge about improving your drawing, different ways of suggesting a sense of the three dimensional and space, obtain likeness, how to use pencils, charcoal, chalk pastels, mix colour using a range of palettes, apply paint, create a sense of light, colour contrast, tone, expression and style.

The tutor’s aim is to help you to take what you need for your own personal development.

Materials Required:

What to bring to the first session: Bring to the first class any drawing and painting materials you possess i.e. acrylic paints, brushes, pencils etc. Paper and further items can be purchased from the school shop.

Previous Experience:

The course is suitable for all levels including beginners.

End of course:

What will I achieve? The aim is ‘to take what you need’ from analysing different paintings to see if a better understanding can be an aid to improving the quality of your own paintings.
