Egg Tempera Painting

Egg tempera is a painting technique that was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting.

What The Course is About:

Egg tempera is a painting technique that was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting. It is a permanent, fast drying painting medium, consisting of coloured pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder of egg yolk. You will be taught a range of techniques such as sponging, skumbling and building up layers or glazes of colour. You will then develop skills with the medium using brushes and building up your composition layer by layer. You will also learn to make paints using an egg binder and dry pigments. Beginners will have a selection of images to choose from or you may bring your own after the first class. In the beginning it is better to use a small panel and pre-sized composition. You will be encouraged to develop your own style as the course progresses and your skills develop over the year. Opportunity will be given for experimentation with techniques and methods - under guidance.

Materials Required:

Bring to the first class any pigments you have and a pure Gesso panel. Small panels and pigments can be purchased from the tutor if needed. It is suggested that beginners take this option. A 15cm x 20cm pure gesso panel is £10 (A panel will take weeks to finish) Pigments are available for use at £3 per class Eggs will be provided Other materials needed: Brushes –Size 8 or smaller (sable is best but please bring what you have already). Watercolour palette. You may want to wait until after the first class to get a palette if you don’t have one. There will be some loaner palettes available. End of course:

During the course you will learn to create your own paints using dried pigments with an egg binder. You will also learn the techniques needed to create a multi-layered and beautiful artwork. It is suitable for any students wanting to improve existing skills as well as for beginners. The class offers a supportive environment with assistance and encouragement from your tutor.
