Life Drawing (All levels)

This course is equally worthwhile for those with no drawing or painting experience, as they are for the experienced artist. The aim of the course is to encourage students to develop their drawing and painting skills via access to what some consider the most compelling form, the human body.

What The Course is About:

The course is open to both beginners and the experienced student alike. The emphasis will be on observation, building upon basic principles of drawing and moving towards personal expression through experimentation with various media and techniques. Each session will be structured so that individual students will be working in the same manner, although with very different results. During an end of session group discussion, students will be able to view each other’s work; this is useful in learning from each other. The tutor will often illustrate the lessons objectives through a brief demonstration. During the session the tutor will discuss, with each student, the progress of their work, offering, if required, suggestions and advice. Each student will be treated as an individual, so beginner, intermediate or advanced student will be able to develop his or her own practice. Students, assessing their own personal development, may wish to work in a particular medium over consecutive sessions.

NOTE: SOME COURSES ARE ON-SITE, ONLINE ONLY OR A MIXTURE, SO PLEASE CHECK BEFORE BOOKING.

Materials Required:

What to bring to the first session: At the start of the term each student will receive a materials list, relating to the course structure. Materials can be bought at the schools shop. For the first two sessions it is useful to bring an A3, white cartridge pad, as well as pencils, 2B, 3B, 4B, putty rubber, masking tape or bulldog clips and charcoal.

Previous Experience:

End of course:

What will I achieve? Students will be encouraged to depict the figure in terms of line and tone; exploring negative space and the location of shapes and space around the figure to aid the assessment of proportion and distance. The application of pastels and paint will enable an exploration of tonal and expressive colour. The course will also give the students an opportunity to experiment with various mixed media techniques, such as collage.
