NEW Photojournalism and Documentary Photography

If you are passionate about photography and taking pictures but would like to explore the possibilities of visual communication, this course will give you an insight into the world of documentary photography and photojournalism.

What The Course is About:

Photographs are a form of visual storytelling and on this 5 week course you will develop your creative ability to communicate through photography. You will be taught by a professional, practicing photojournalist on the process that requires a whole range of skills, knowledge and experience involved in this profession. This course has a strong practical base and an emphasis on sharing and discussion. You will learn about the key elements of documentary photography and photojournalism, explore different visual languages and consider how they convey messages. Assignments and practical exercises will enable you to improve your technical skills, develop your photographic style and build up your confidence. Each week you will tackle an aspect of documentary photography and explore it in practice. This course will give students the opportunity to explore the technicalities and issues surrounding the practice from a working photojournalist who will give you a taster into this exciting profession and then exploring the realities of opportunities in today’s marketplace.

Materials Required:

You will need to bring your digital camera (please also bring the camera’s instruction booklet or we can access it online). You do not have to own the Photoshop software to participate in the course but it's worth seeing what can be achieved. A USB memory stick is also very useful.

What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should have a better understanding of photojournalism including presenting several documentary photography works, identify and name different visual approaches within this genre, develop an ability to think critically about objectivity and truth in photojournalism.
