NEW Watercolour for Beginners

This course is ideal for beginners who want to learn the essential techniques and approaches of watercolour painting, and to develop skills in using this exciting medium.

What The Course is About:

You will be tutored in the basic skills and techniques of watercolour, such as mixing, layering, washes, applications, palette management and use of materials [paper, brushes, paints etc..] Different subjects will be explored, such as landscape, still life, urban scenes etc.. and these will be related to the work of a variety of artists, both traditional and contemporary. Demonstrations and discussions will be given to gain an understanding of how to approach exercises and projects.

Materials Required:

B or 2B Pencils, eraser, Watercolour paints [pans or tubes – a box of pans are preferable for beginners…White Nights, St Petersburg paints are good quality..around £30-35, or Rosa Gallery Watercolours, similar ..available from Cowling and Wilcox £25], watercolour palette for mixing paints, Watercolour brushes [synthetic Flats and rounds – No 8, No 16] Watercolour pad [A3 Cold-pressed NOT], Plastic pot for water, Tissues. Some materials can be expensive, so we will discuss what to buy during the first session.

Previous Experience:

This course is suitable for complete beginners and those who have some basic knowledge of watercolour.

End of course:

By the end of the course, you will have learned the basic techniques and approaches to using watercolour, relating to a variety of subjects and artists, working from direct observation and photographic sources. This will give you a general grounding on the different ways to manipulate watercolour, as well as an understanding of colour theory, colour mixing, split primaries and using a restricted palette. Some tutoring will also be given for drawing skills.
