Summer School – 2 Days: Exploring Etching on Steel
Open to experienced etchers or complete beginners, this 2-day practical printmaking workshop will explore making and printing from steel plates. Steel has exciting properties that make it a great metal for experimentation. It’s particularly suited to deeply etched marks and tactile textures as well as printing in vibrant and intense colour.
What The Course is About:
Steel has exciting properties that make it a great metal for experimental printmaking. It’s particularly suited to deeply etched marks and tactile textures as well as printing in vibrant and intense colour. This 2-day practical workshop is suitable for experienced etchers and complete beginners, wanting to explore the possibilities of this compelling and versatile medium. The workshop will cover a range of etching techniques applied to steel including soft ground, sugar lift, open bite, spit bite, and also varied approaches to printing in monochrome and colour.
Materials Required:
If you have a painting, drawing or image you’d like to refer to, or work from during the course, please bring it along. Please bring a selection of pencils, some basic paintbrushes and a sketchbook or notebook. Materials can be purchased from the school shop. Etching can be messy so it’s a good idea to bring an apron.
Previous Experience:
This course is suitable for beginners and more experienced etchers who want to either refresh or develop their skills.
End of course:
On this course you will learn: how to prepare a steel plate, techniques including soft ground, sugar lift, open and spit bite and varied approaches to printing your plate in monochrome and colour. How to combine different methods to achieve desired results. Tutor input and support will be available to discuss the use of different techniques in your work.
