Summer School – Composition & Colour: Joan Eardly and the influence of Turner and Constable

‘Take What You Need’ from exploring the Expressionist works of Joan Eardley and explores how she was influenced by the colour and monumental compositions of both Turner and Constable.

What The Course is About:

This painting course delves into the Expressionist works of Joan Eardley and explores how she was influenced by the colour and monumental compositions of both Turner and Constable. Day 1: We will examine Eardley’s expressionist approach to oil painting, with a particular focus on her use of colour and composition, drawing influence from Turner and Constable. Special attention will be given to how she balances nature’s raw power with a sense of fragility. You’ll choose and study one pr more of Eardley’s paintings, with demonstrations to deepen your understanding of her techniques. Days 2 and 3: You’ll apply the concepts explored on Day 1 as you paint on location along the Thames in Putney. The practical sessions will give you the opportunity to incorporate Eardley’s expressionist approach into your own work. The goal of the course is to inspire you with Eardley’s unique style and help you refine your painting skills in an expressive, location-based context.

Materials Required:

What to bring to the first session: Bring to the first class any drawing and painting materials you possess. Paper and further items can be purchased from the school shop.
