Jan studied painting at Maidstone college of art in Kent, followed later by a MA in printmaking at Camberwell and teacher training (PGCE) at the university of Greenwich. As an artist he works primarily in the areas of painting, drawing and printmaking. In recent years, his work has all – in some way – originated from photographic images.
However the resulting paintings (or, as he now calls them, ‘image objects’) are insistently material. Using oil paint and a variety of media they create complicated surfaces; his objects object to the insubstantiality of our image world.
